Listen to children read, one-to-one, in your local primary school.
Schoolreaders is a national child literacy charity that recruits volunteers to go into local primary schools to listen to children read one-to one during the school day. Volunteers need to be able to commit to visiting the school once a week during term time for one hour or more for at least a year (although time off can be taken for holidays or other reasons). Our volunteers get enormous pleasure from seeing the difference that a few hours of their time can make to a child’s reading ability, confidence and enjoyment, and from being involved in the school community.

Our volunteers do not need any particular qualifications, but Schoolreaders volunteers need to be 18 or over, enjoy spending time with children, have a good level of written and spoken English and be able to commit to attending school weekly during term time for a minimum of 1 year. Schoolreaders is a free service for primary schools and all our volunteers give their time freely.
As a volunteer, you’ll make a meaningful difference in children’s reading development and to their future life chances by helping to strengthen their reading skills and spark a love of reading. You will have the opportunity to build lasting connections with your school, as well as with other volunteers through online forums or the Facebook group run by Schooreaders. Many volunteers find it incredibly rewarding to see the impact of their support on children’s confidence and academic progress and feel a sense of purpose from contributing their time and skills within their community.
We ask volunteers to be able to commit to attending school weekly during term time for a minimum of 1 year.
