Volunteer Mentor
Build Mentoring Programme (The Salvation Army)
Volunteer mentor supporting survivors of modern slavery to build confidence and independence.
Support survivors of modern slavery as a volunteer mentor with the Build Mentoring Programme. Mentors work in pairs to support one survivor, with fortnightly meetings over a 12‑month period, offering consistent, friendly encouragement alongside professional services. You might help practise English, work towards education or employment goals, explore local community activities, or simply provide stability and connection. No previous mentoring experience is needed — just reliability, compassion, and a willingness to listen. Full training and ongoing support are provided.
Befriending, Buddying & Mentoring
Interpersonal, Empathy, Flexibility
Active listening, empathy, reliability, clear communication, boundaries awareness, and a commitment to supporting someone at their own pace. No previous mentoring experience required. Training provided.
You’ll build meaningful relationships with your mentee and fellow mentor, becoming a trusted and valued source of support and connection during a challenging time. You’ll also be a valued member of The Salvation Army’s Anti‑Trafficking and Modern Slavery volunteer team, with opportunities to grow your mentoring practice through training and other opportunities. You’ll be invited to a range of events and activities, including creative workshops and performances. As well as the satisfaction of making a lasting difference, you'll gain skills which could support a career in the charity or public sectors, including active listening, relationship‑building, cultural awareness, using goal-setting tools, and knowledge of safeguarding and GDPR. You will gain knowledge and experience of a range of issues specific to anti-trafficking and modern slavery - including insight into the National Referral Mechanism and other systems - which could support applications to roles in this sector. Mentoring sessions are flexible, arranged around the availability of each member of the trio. Whilst mentoring is a 12-month commitment, we can often accommodate periods of absence or changes in circumstance: get in touch to find out more.
Before starting mentoring, mentors must attend two virtual training sessions (2-3 hours each) as well as completing a range of other online trainings. Once it begins, mentoring is a 12-month commitment, with mentors meeting every two weeks, usually for 1-2 hours (though we can accommodate holidays and other periods of absence, and sometimes periods of attending virtually).
