Youth Justice Service Referral Order Panel Member
Bath and North East Somerset Youth Justice Service
You will be facilitating Referral Order Panels for children working with the Youth Justice Service
We need committed and motivated volunteers to facilitate and lead Referral Order Panel meetings involving children and young people who have committed a crime and have been given a Referral Order by a Court. Along with a second volunteer panel member, you will work with the child or young person during the meetings to agree and review a contract of reparative work they will complete with the support of their Case Manager and the Youth Justice Service Reparation Worker.

• An ability to engage with children and young people, parents and carers from diverse ethnic, cultural and social backgrounds. • A commitment to maintaining confidentiality. • Be able to work in a non-judgemental and non-discriminatory way and respect other people’s point of views. • Effective communication skills. • An ability to think logically, to weigh arguments and to reach logical conclusions. • A willingness to listen to advice and to the views of others. • An ability to reflect on your contribution to the panel meetings.
We do not expect you to have all the skills needed to be a Referral Order panel member from the start. We will provide full training which will help you prepare for a challenging but worthwhile task. Once you become a panel member you will continue to receive regular training and 1-2-1’s to support you in your role.
The commitment for panel members is dictated by the length of the referral order, and how many referral orders you agree to commit to. Referral Orders last for 3-12 months, with 2 meetings required for a 3-month order and 5 for a 12-month order. Meetings are spread across the number of months the order lasts for, so the more panels you commit to, the more meetings you will attend.

The majority of panel meetings take place at the Youth Justice Service office in Bath city centre, however, we also use venues in Radstock and Midsomer Norton.
